Most men think of many creative ways to propose to their girlfriends. Most of them may choose to have an intimate dinner with music and candles. But who would think of a way to give his girlfriend engagement ring was hidden in a necklace without her knowing it?
Anna and Terry, a couple in Tasmania, Australia had been dating for one year. During his first-year anniversary, Terry made Anna a necklace, the first one he’d ever made. The necklace was very simple, with a shell carved right in the center and was made from Tasmanian pine wood.
Anna loved the necklace and wore it everywhere they go. What she did not know was her boyfriend tricked her to carry her engagement ring in her necklace for a long time.
“I had always loved the idea of giving someone a gift where they didn’t know its true value until years later,” Terry said.
After a year and a half, Terry decided to propose to Anna at Smoo Cave (means “hiding place”) in Scotland, a place we had talked about since they first met. This moment was when Terry finally decided to tell Anna what had been hidden in her beloved necklace.
“Before we went down to the cave, I asked if I could have the necklace to take some photos of it among the rocks, which gave me a quick chance to break the seal with a knife,” he recalled.

“I then set up my camera on a timer and ran into the frame for the nice photo of the two of us, then said ‘Oh, I’d better give you the necklace back.'”
Anna’s reaction was caught on camera, as you can see in the video Terry shared on YouTube. Anna jumped into her fiancé’s arms. But after the initial shock and excitement wore off, Ann told Terry what we’re all thinking: “Wait … Is it being in there the entire time? I could have lost it!!”
In fact, Terry shared that there were two occasions that the ring could have lost. Once was when Anna wanted to trade the necklace with a blacksmith at a market. Another close call was at the airport set off a warning at the security checkpoint.
Fortunately, everything went as Terry planned at Smoo Cave!
